Charioteer Shri Krishna

Updated: Mar 21, 2021

Such an auspicious day for us, for our home. Finally painting of Shri Krishna and Arjuna has been fixed ( not sure if that's the right word but I'm unable find more appropriate one) on the wall.

I have always heard from my father that not to put a scene from Mahabharata in home. He believes that it disturbs peace of house and brings quarrel within the family. However, I refuse to believe the same and I believe Shri Krishna and Arjuna are going to bring peace and harmony in our life, going to fill our minds with wisdom of Bhagvad Gita. A life coach guiding us through our life is going to sit right there in house looking upon us.

What I believe and my what my father believes both the philosophies are true. Here is what I understood after reading Bhagvad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam -

Even though physical entities of this materialistic world cannot affect Shree Krishna and he is Trigunatit ( त्रिगुणातित ) - Beyond 3 Gunas (Satva, Raj, Tam), he always has affections towards his devotees.

Arjuna was one of such dearest devotees of Shree Krishna. Shree Krishna wasn't just cousin brother of him, he was Arjuna's friend, his spiritual master and when he made Arjuna undisputed warrior of greatest war in the history of mankind - Mahabharata, Shree Krishna played a role charioteer for him.

Arjuna was so blessed that, because of presence of Shree Krishna, Lord Hanuman offered his help and services to him. Chariot of Arjuna is called Kapi (मर्कट - Monkey) Dhwaj (Flag) because Lord Hanuman brought stability to the chariot as he stood strong on the flag on top of the chariot. Celestial weapons like Bramhastra also couldn't affect the chariot till the end of the war.

This Chariot of Arjuna was gifted to Arjuna by Lord Agni (Lord Of Fire). The four horses of this chariot are like Lust (काम), Anger (क्रोध), Greed (लोभ) and Moksha (मोक्ष - Liberation) who are under control of charioteer Shree Krishna. No human can escape from their influence unless and until he decides to surrender to Shree Krishna.

Even though Arjuna wasn't immortal , Bhagvad Gita and Geetopadesh made him immortal through this sacred literature.

This is how Shree Krishna always showered his love and blessings on Arjuna and a painting or picture of Arjuna's pair with Shree Krishna is symbol of lot of such many things.

That's why Sanjay says in Bhagvad Gita Chapter 18 verse 78 ( last verse)

यत्र योगेश्वर: कृष्णो यत्र पार्थो धनुर्धार: ।

तत्र श्रीर्विजयो भूतिर्ध्रुवा नीतिर्मतिर्मम ।।७८।।

yatra yogeśvaraḥ kṛṣṇo

yatra pārtho dhanur-dharaḥ

tatra śrīr vijayo bhūtir

dhruvā nītir matir mama

Translation :

Wherever there is Bhagavan Shri Krishna, the Lord of Yoga, and wherever there is Arjuna, The wielder of the Gandiva bow, goodness, victory, glory and unfailing righteousness are there, such is my conviction.

Shree (श्री) means Goddess Laxmi. Goddess of good luck and prosperity. Shree Krishna is Narayan.

If someone wants to just a hang a painting of Shree Krishna and Arjuna on the wall without understanding the meaning of it, without understanding Bhagvad Gita and just as a piece of art then why would Laxmi stay in that house where her beloved Narayan doesn't get enough respect. No wonder it would destroy the peace of the house and when the peace is destroyed, one would lose his wealth as well.

I hope this helps people, who just believe something blindly and try to tarnish the image of sacred painting of Shree Krishna and Arjuna. I often see this painting comes with following shlokas from Bhagvad Gita -

yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata

abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaṁ sṛjāmy aham

paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām

dharma-saṁsthāpanārthāya sambhavāmi yuge yuge

Translation :

Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion – at that time I descend Myself.

To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I Myself appear, millennium after millennium.

They fail to understand that this painting is beyond just 2 shlokas of Bhagvad Gita.

One of the interesting part of the journey of the painting to home, right from purchasing to fixing the frame is -

  • Painting was made by a Hindu artist

  • Frame was made by a Muslim frame-maker

  • It was fixed on the wall by a Christian carpenter

हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरे |

हरे राम हरे राम राम राम हरे हरे ||
